Overview

Both the City of Denver and Colorado need to move from inspiration to action on meeting critical climate goals.

A five-part series of events this year sponsored by Environmental Entrepreneurs and the Natural Resources Defense Council, is designed to bring  advocates, business leaders, and residents together to move forward on clean transportation, renewable energy, energy-efficiency and equitable access to clean air, water, healthy food, and natural resources for all residents.

The Colorado Climate Plan is designed to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and increase adaptation by setting  clear  emission-reduction goals. Denver’s updated Climate Action Plan is ambitious, and these events will help push forward in positioning the city as a climate leader.

Each panel in the series will feature city and/or state staff, advocates or business leaders with special expertise in each designated climate issue, with the goal of mapping out clear and achievable actions.

The second in the 5-part series is:

Shrinking the Landfill: Increasing Waste Diversion and Food Waste Reduction

Colorado has a recycling rate of 12% with Denver’s is only slightly higher, at 23%, both much lower than the national average of 35%. Meanwhile, 40% of food is wasted, while 42 million Americans are food insecure, including one in five Denver residents.

By improving waste diversion, we can decrease the food insecurity gap and build a more resilient food system, bolster our local economy by adding clean jobs and new markets, and push the city closer to sustainability and waste goals.

Please join NRDC and E2 to hear from local and state leaders discuss strategies for policy, infrastructure, end markets, and the barriers and opportunities in waste diversion.
