Colorado is leading the Mountain West’s clean energy economy.
With nearly 60,000 clean energy workers now, the state’s potential reached new heights in 2018 with strong employment growth across cleantech sectors (4.8%)—far outpacing overall national (1.5%) and statewide (2.4%) job growth.
According to Clean Jobs Colorado 2019 (downloadable PDF) report, Colorado’s is now among the top 10 states for jobs in three sectors: wind energy (3rd), bioenergy (9th), and overall renewable energy (6th). The state fell just outside the Top 10 in solar energy (11th). However, the majority of Colorado’s clean energy job growth came from energy efficiency and clean vehicles, which grew 7.2% and 22.5%respectively.
Analyzing the state geographically,the employment analysis found that while Denver and Boulder accounted for nearly one out of every three clean jobs in the state, about 20 percent (29,000) are in areas outside the Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins metro areas. Additionally, all 64 counties in the state are home to clean energy workers, with 11 counties supporting at least 1,100. Denver led all counties with more than 13,200 jobs, followed by Arapahoe (7,600) and Jefferson (5,800) counties. By density, Jackson, Denver, and Boulder counties led the state in clean jobs per 1,000 employable residents. All 64 counties in Colorado are home to clean energy workers, with 11 counties supporting over 1,000 jobs.
Smart policies such as the Zero-Emission Vehicle standards adopted by Colorado’s Air Quality Control Commission in August and Gov. Polis’ roadmap to 100% renewable energy will help ensure that Colorado’s clean energy economy keeps growing. And businesses have noticed, with Colorado clean energy employers predicting they’ll add jobs more than twice as fast in 2019 (10.3%) as 2018.

America’s Clean Energy Economy JuggernautWith nation-leading public policies like the Low Carbon Fuel Standard and Renewables Portfolio Standard, California, with its more than half a million workers across clean energy industries, remains far and away the nation’s shining example of clean economic prosperity. Across all states, California supports one out of every seven U.S. clean energy jobs, four out of every ten U.S. solar energy jobs, and one more than one out of every four U.S. renewable generation jobs. In fact, California’s is home to more renewable generation jobs than the next top six states combined and twice as many energy efficiency jobs as the no. 2 state (Texas).
While the solar energy industry remains the standard bearer of clean energy employment and historical growth in California, other industries are making significant headway; notably, California’s clean vehicle industry saw a 22 percent increase in employment in 2018. In 2019, California is expected to once again drive the nation’s clean economic growth with state employers projecting nearly a 10 percent increase in jobs across renewable generation, energy efficiency, clean vehicles, grid services, energy storage, and more.
Combined with this market domination, big opportunities remain as the world’s fifth-largest economy takes aim at meeting its ambitious carbon reduction targets.
This report focuses solely on the energy sector of the economy and does not include jobs in retail trade, repair services, water or waste management, and indirect employment or induced employment.

North Carolina is the Southeast’s leader in clean energy jobs. Not only does the Tar Heel state rank among the top 10 states in the country across clean energy categories such as solar energy, energy efficiency, and overall clean energy.
According to Clean Jobs North Carolina 2019 (downloadable PDF), the state’s clean energy jobs grew 3.5 percent last year – nearly double statewide employment growth (1.9%) —and now account for more than half of North Carolina’s entire energy sector workforce (212,172). Clean vehicles led all sectors in growth, adding more than 1,000 jobs for a 19.5% growth rate.
Along with being a national pioneer in solar energy as the No 2. state for installed solar and No. 9 for jobs, North Carolina is fast becoming a powerhouse in energy efficiency as well with over 86,000 jobs – employing more workers in energy efficiency alone than 39 states do in all clean energy sectors.
All 100 counties in North Carolina—from Cherokee to Currituck—are home to residents who work in clean energy jobs, and 26 counties are home to at least 900 jobs. And while the metropolitan areas of Charlotte and Raleigh combine to make up the largest portion of the state’s clean jobs (37,700), its rural areas account for 25 percent of all the state’s jobs in renewable energy, efficiency, storage, and clean vehicles and fuels (29,000).

Pennsylvania’s clean energy sector continued its strong growth trend in 2018, topping 90,000 employees for the first time and adding jobs five times faster than the overall state employment growth rate.
Led by one of the nation’s top energy efficiency industries and supported by burgeoning renewable energy and clean vehicle sectors, Pennsylvania has developed one of the strongest diversified clean economies in the country with rural communities benefiting right alongside the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh metro areas.
Since 2014, Pennsylvania has increased its workforce in clean technologies like renewables, energy efficiency, clean vehicles, storage, and grid modernization by nearly 60 percent – employing now twice as many workers as the state’s entire fossil fuel industry. This recent growth over the past several years has put Pennsylvania within 4,400 jobs of overtaking Virginia as the No. 10 state in the U.S. for clean energy employment.

New Jersey’s is on the verge of an economic boom in clean energy.
With nearly 52,000 jobs statewide in fields such as renewables, clean vehicles manufacturing, and energy efficiency, New Jersey’s clean energy economy employs more than giants like UPS (19,000 workers), Wal-Mart (17,405), and Verizon (15,000) combined.
According to Clean Jobs New Jersey 2019 (downloadable PDF), New Jersey ranks ninth in renewable energy jobs, ninth in solar jobs, sixth in geothermal jobs, sixth in bioenergy, and seventh in low-impact hydro jobs among all U.S. States. The state’s clean economy also enjoys one of the highest employment rates of veterans, accounting for 13.3 % of all clean energy workers. While 40,000 clean jobs are located in the New York metro area (which ranks second in the U.S.), all 21 counties in the state employ workers in clean energy with 15 counties home to more than 1,000.
