WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released standards today for tailpipe emissions from new heavy-duty trucks. The final rules will run from 2027 through 2032 and are expected to reduce emissions from heavy-duty trucks by 1 billion metric tons.

The following is a statement from Bob Keefe, executive director of the national nonpartisan business group E2:

“These standards are a good start – but we can do much better.

“Shifting the heavy transportation sector to cleaner vehicles will reduce fuel costs for operators, spur innovation at big rig manufacturers and cut pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

“The Biden administration could – and should – do much more to advance a zero-emission transportation future, but at least we’re rolling in the right direction.”

Founded in 2000, E2 got its start making the business and economic case for the world’s first greenhouse gas tailpipe emissions standards, California AB 1493. The legislation would become the model for federal tailpipe emissions standards and helped spur auto industry innovations that lead to today’s hybrid, electric and other vehicle innovations.
