The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is expected to adopt the Advanced Clean Cars II (ACII) regulation, which requires all new cars and trucks sold in California to be zero-emission vehicles beginning in 2035. The rule builds on California’s legacy of leadership on clean vehicle standards and sets a path forward for other states.

The following is a statement by Bob Keefe, executive director of the national nonpartisan business organization E2 (Environmental Entrepreneurs):

“California’s decision will create even more momentum for innovation in the clean transportation sector. It also sets a clear and smart path for other states on the road to a better environment and economy in America.

“It’s good for the environment and the economy – not just for California but for the country.”

E2 was the leading business voice to support passage of the first greenhouse gas tailpipe emissions standards in California – and the world – 20 years ago. Since then, California’s groundbreaking clean cars standards have been a model for other states and for the federal government. They also jump-started the automobile industry’s evolutionary transition to hybrid and electric vehicles.

That transition has spurred American innovation and investment, created hundreds of thousands of jobs and helped make electric vehicle manufacturing the fastest-growing sector of the clean energy industry last year.

According to E2’s just-released Clean Jobs America 2022 report, the U.S. clean vehicle sector employed 339,000 workers last year, including nearly 54,000 Californians. Jobs building clean vehicles grew by 26 percent – a faster rate than any other clean energy subsector.
