New USEER report will build on E2’s past clean energy jobs work
WASHINGTON (December 5, 2017) – E2 has joined Energy Futures Initiative, the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) and other organizations to produce the most comprehensive study of clean energy and other energy jobs in America.
The 2018 U.S. Energy and Employment Report (USEER) will provide detailed analysis of energy jobs for every state, including jobs in solar, wind, energy efficiency and clean transportation. The report is expected to be released in spring 2018.
It builds on research and reports first initiated by E2 and research partner BW Research several years ago, which later became the basis for development of similar USEER reports produced the U.S. Department of Energy in 2016 and 2017.
“E2 has been tracking clean energy job growth in America since 2011. We’ve watched solar, wind, energy efficiency and other occupations become a major part of our economy all across the country,” said Bob Keefe, executive director of the E2 (Environmental Entrepreneurs), a national nonpartisan group of business leaders. “Thanks to this new report and its unprecedented group of partners, we’ll be able to show just how widespread these jobs are, right down to the local level in every state.”
Also participating in the USEER study are Chicago-based Clean Energy Trust (CET), which with E2 produced the comprehensive Clean Jobs Midwest report for the past three years running, and E4TheFuture, which with E2 produced the 2016 Energy Efficiency Jobs in America report. Both of those reports will be updated with data collected as part of the 2018 USEER report.
“We are excited to see an increase in the macro-level awareness created by jobs reports E2 has spearheaded,” said Stephen Cowell, president of E4TheFuture. “These are percolating into the larger energy and sustainability narrative nationwide. E4TheFuture is very pleased to support an updated report.”
The new USEER report builds on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and separate surveys of thousands of energy-related businesses across the country and other analysis.
“Without the USEER, we couldn’t tell how many people are employed by new technologies that cut across current BLS occupational codes, nor how many people are actually employed by our traditional utilities as their business models evolve,” said Dave Foster, who is overseeing the USEER report for Energy Futures Initiative (EFI). EFI was established by former Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz to provide policymakers, industry executives, NGOs, and other leaders options on how to advance a cleaner, safer, more affordable, and secure energy future.
Philip Jordan, vice president of report researcher BW Research said: “This study relies on the identical methodology used in previous years, so a major benefit of the research is its comparability to prior reports. With the pace of change in energy markets today, rigorous research design and consistent application are key to producing reliable results.”
