Date: September 25, 2018

1.8 Million Jobs and Growing in Top 50 US Metros

The Top 50 metro areas for clean jobs now employ 1.8 million workers in clean energy technologies, accounting for more than one out of every two clean energy jobs in the country – which alone outnumbers the fossil fuel industry by around 700,000.

These are Americans who go to work each day making downtown skyscrapers more energy efficient; manufacturing Energy Star appliances and clean vehicles; installing solar panels on urban warehouses and suburban homes.

Unsurprisingly, the country’s biggest metropolitan areas – New York and Los Angeles – have the most clean energy workers. But smaller and mid-sized metro areas across every region in the continental US – such as Detroit, San Diego, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Phoenix, and Atlanta – all rank high on the list.

HIGHLIGHTS

According to Clean Jobs Cities:

  • 33 states and the District of Columbia are home to Top 50 metro areas for clean energy jobs, accounting for every region in the continental U.S.
  • All Top 50 metros employ more than 10,000 clean energy workers
  • The Top 50 metros make up 58% of the nation’s 3.2 million clean energy jobs

Clean Jobs California 2018

Date: September 17, 2018

America’s Preeminent Clean Energy Jobs Champion

When it comes to clean energy jobs in America, no state does more than California— accounting for more than 1 out of 7 US clean energy jobs nationally and nearly a third of renewable energy jobs alone. Across all states in fact, California supports more renewable energy jobs than the next top 7 states combined and has twice as many jobs in energy efficiency than the #2 state (Texas).

Combined with this market domination, big opportunities remain for clean energy job growth in the state with the California Energy Commission passing requirements for solar panels on all new homes built after 2020 and legislation passed and signed into law in September 2018 that sets the state on the path to 100% clean energy by 2045.

A BIGGER PICTURE

This report focuses solely on the energy sector of the economy and does not include jobs in retail trade, repair services, water or waste management, and indirect employment or induced employment.

HIGHLIGHTS

According to Clean Jobs California:

  • Clean energy jobs outnumber fossil fuel jobs in the state by over 430,000
  • The state employs more energy jobs than any other state, with clean jobs accounting for more than 55% of all energy sector jobs in California
  • California has clean energy workers in all 58 counties
  • 10.8% of clean energy workers in California are veterans
  • 12,000 rural Californians are employed by clean energy
  • More than 1 out of every 4 clean energy jobs are in regions outside of the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles Metro Area, and San Diego Metro Area
  • 20% of the state’s renewable energy workers are employed in metro areas with populations under 1 million
  • 61% of California clean energy workers are involved in construction or manufacturing
