WASHINGTON – In a welcome about-face, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) announced that it plans to significantly increase its purchases of electric delivery vehicles and move towards creating one of the largest electric vehicle fleets in the nation. Boosted by federal investment from the Inflation Reduction Act, the USPS intends to deploy over 66,000 electric vehicles by 2028.

In 2021, the clean vehicle industry added more than 65,000 jobs — a 26 percent increase and  the fastest growth rate across the entire energy sector according to the Department of Energy’s annual U.S. Energy and Employment Report.

The following is a statement from Sandra Purohit, Director of Federal Advocacy for the national nonpartisan business group E2 (Environmental Entrepreneurs).

“This is a huge step toward achieving an all-electric postal fleet – which is not only good for the environment and the Postal Service’s bottom line, but also the economy and its burgeoning clean energy workforce.”

“Facilitated by historic clean vehicle investments from Congress, this plan sets the Postal Service solidly on the path to electrification and at the forefront of the clean transportation transition.”
